Attire Tips

FRIDAY, 7/25, INDIAN CELEBRATION/SANGEET

The Indian celebration will be a vibrant and culturally rich event, honoring core traditions.  The Sangeet will follow, with music, dancing and an array of delicious food! There will be an Indian DJ and a highlight of the night will be choreographed dance performances by family and friends of the bride and groom. Additionally, mehndi (henna) artists will be on hand for anyone that’s interested!

Attire: If you choose to wear Western (typical American attire), the dress code is cocktail. However, we encourage traditional Indian or Indo-Western attire. Indian attire is not mandatory, but certainly welcomed! There are many options for what to wear.

Color: We recommend colorful outfits! Black is not a traditional color for Indian wedding events.

Women: Sarees and lehengas are the most common options. If you choose to wear a Saree, and have no experience wearing one, please purchase a “ready to wear” pre-draped Saree. A typical Saree is very difficult to tie on yourself but a pre-draped Saree is very easy to wear!  Some other outfit styles are Salwar Kameez and pantsuits. Indo-western attire is also a fun option, which is a more modern style that combines Indian style with American/European style. Please see photos below for some examples.

Men: Kurtas or sherwani suits are both excellent options. An Indian style vest can also be great. You can wear pants you already own or you can purchase Indian style pants, the tighter ones are known as churidar or the looser ones are dhoti. See photos below for some examples.

Where to Shop: If you are near a major city, there are often in person Indian stores you can shop at. Some of the better cities for shopping in person are NYC (in the New Jersey and Long Island area especially), LA, and Toronto. Poshmark, Ebay and Facebook marketplace are great options for second hand. Another great option is to borrow from friends or family who may have attended an Indian wedding before!

Here are some great websites to shop for outfits as well:

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out! We know this can be a lot to take in and we’re more than happy to help!
